The phrase "resort on the moon" can conjure up images in the imagination of the kind of luxury accommodations that require rocket travel. But this type of tourism is being planned by Dubai on the ground with the Moon Dubai project, a moon-shaped building worth $5 billion.

Sandra G. Matthews and Michael R. Henderson, co-founders of Canadian architecture firm Moon World Resorts in charge of this project, said that after being built, Moon Dubai will be "a modern, large and successful tourism project. in the entire MENA (Middle East-North Africa) region, doubling the number of tourist arrivals annually based on its global appeal and a variety of unique integrated services.”

In October 2022, the two founders revealed to Arabian Business that they were considering the super project Dubai Pearl as the ideal place to place Moon Dubai. Matthews and Henderson are still conducting surveys throughout the MENA area.

The proposed Moon Dubai will be completed in 48 months, includes a spherical base block and "the world's largest sphere with a diameter of 229m, a 360-degree reproduction of the moon".

This project integrates a club of the super-rich, a 100-room 6-star hotel and a 4,000-room 5-star hotel with spa, event center, indoor "shuttle"... capable of welcoming 10 million visitors each year.

According to Michael R. Henderson, the key point of the project is the moon - a symbol that is recognizable and loved by everyone around the world.

Inside the spherical building, Moon Dubai built 300 luxury private apartments, whose owners will become members of the exclusive private club here. Although there are no traditional windows to the outside world, the developers have the idea of making "electronic windows", giving visitors the opportunity to see whatever they want.

The resort's spherical surface will be designed to mimic the surface of the moon itself, complete with craters and textures similar to the earth's only satellite. Moon Dubai is expected to allow 2.5 million guests to experience space at an affordable price without the need for a spacecraft. The cost for the service to go to the moon will be about 500 USD, much cheaper than space trips costing from 450,000 USD.

The interior of Moon Dubai is designed in a cosmic style and with many entertainment themes. The company Moon World Resorts also hopes to establish Moon Dubai as a training site for various space agencies.

"Moon Dubai will significantly impact every aspect of the emirate's economy including tourism, transportation, commercial and residential real estate, infrastructure, financial services, goods and services. aerospace, energy, MICE, agriculture, industry and of course education."

After this project was announced, Henderson received quite positive feedback from investors as well as the people of Dubai. The project comes with "enormous technical challenges" but Henderson and co-founder Matthews are actively working with engineers and architects to make the idea a reality.

Moon Dubai is proposed to operate under the LEED gold certificate, 5-star construction standards and 5-diamond resort operating standards. Moon World Resorts is expected to be licensed to four resorts in North America, Europe, MENA and Asia.

The UAE, and Dubai in particular, has been identified by this company as the "pioneer" for the first "moon". “The UAE is very popular with tourists and many infrastructure projects,” explains Henderson. This man predicts Moon World's first resort will open in 2027.

Henderson and Sandra G. Matthews jointly founded Moon World Resorts Inc. in 2000, at the same time many private space exploration companies were founded such as Jeff Bezos' BlueOrigins (2000) Elon Musk's SpaceX (2002)... Henderson admitted: "Space is a field. very difficult, Blue Origin, SpaceX and Virgin Galactic have not really done anything until now. We are not different but fortunately have the advantage in promoting in the global market."
